Potential Strategy Essay Example for Free

Potential Strategy EssayMany obstacles to my potential strategy are worth all overcoming. Since the brand new policy is to add extra taxes on pot and fining the smoking companies for their actions, then one is able to make sure that hoi polloi comply or go out of business. A way to bounce back the challenges is to pass water someone from to each one company represented in Congress (Kottke, RN, GH, ML., 1988). This may mean making sure that in that location is someone in judicature that is passionate about this issue, and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that wad do comply with the new law. Through this effort, fewer mistakes are made, and people are getting what they need done to make it happen by having someone speak on their behalf. Any gender can do this no matter of background (Kottke, et al., 1988).For example, medical people are more thorough with this matter because they are required to ask the patient of smoking in the past earlier doing anything with him or her surgically or when an emergency arises. Because of this effort, people will live longer due to extra steps taken on behalf of the patients in the hospitals from each of the medical staff that is present to take care of them at the time (Kottke, et al., 1988).Many of the U.S. citizens will become opposed to the topic of more taxes however, if the politician or counselor can convince them that it is for the good, then they might become okay with it. This is not going to appear easy at first. He or she will have to speak in major cities and give examples of how this new policy will help everyone in the process. This will make it difficult for everyone else who wants to smoke, which is the goal of the entire matter. Regardless, people are going to have to decide on whether or not to take part in ending smoking for the country or if there is some level of motivation for them to period their horrible habit (Jorenby, et al., 2008).In the end, everyone will learn and see that this is something worthwhile, no matter what he or she has endured through and through the years (Prochaska, DiClemente, Velicer, Rossi, 1993).By going this route, this is more effective. People are able to understand that tobacco companies that sell smoking products need give awayped in every saying possible. The goal is to one day abolish them in the U.S. In fact, many success stories will arise because of it (Glassma, et al., 1990). For example, a woman may say thatshe pass thousands of dollars a year on smoking, unless when the taxes went up and the companies selling the products got fined this motivated her to stop her horrible habit (Glassma, et al., 1990). Commercials could get made to help extrinsically motivate individuals to stop smoking, and through this support groups are made as a doer in holding them accountable, besides with family and friends (Prochaska, et al., 1993).The ultimate goal is to get people to stop smoking. This means that they do everything pos sible to have accountability from everyone around them to make this happen. Not only that, but also from individuals who are seeking a means in which to do everything possible to ensure this matter is re formd in a timely fashion (Silagy Lancaster T, 2007). They will become more open to the idea of having new people in Congress who will advocate for them, and to make it difficult for tobacco companies to exist any longer. Anyone who is a smoker may at first become opposed however, in the future, they will understand that it was for their own good (Prochaska, et al., 1993).Smoking cessation is not an easy topic for anyone to fix because of how long this has occurred over the years. Government may or may not do anything if someone is not there to push the matter forward by making a new bill out of it for people to learn their lesson from when selling smoking products to consumers (Jorenby, et al., 2008).All of those individuals know that they are harming peoples bodies, and making th eir life shorter, but it is as if they do not care about anyone except themselves (Peto, Darby, Deo, Silcocks, Whitley, Doll, 2000). Everyone does understand that it feels good to relieve stress through alcohol and drugs however, this will not solve the problem for anyone who is continuously seeking ways of improvement with their own life. They will have to find other avenues in which to make it easier to handle the stresses of life (Prochaska, Velicer, DiClemente, Fava, 1988). For example, a person can go to the gym and exercise for many hours, instead of smoking for an hour. This will make him or her feel good. Additionally, people will arrive at that they will have to try harder to get into a different habit and to break the old one (Prochaska, DiClemente, Velicer, Rossi, 1993).Reference List1. Glassma, A. Understanding Your Strengths And Weaknesses Essay Example for Free

Understanding Your Strengths And Weaknesses EssayIn a study released, 87% of bringers worldwide atomic number 18 emotionally disconnected from their workplaces and are less likely to be productive making work a source of frustration rather than one of fulfillment. (Gallup, 1993) The statistics garnish a lack of commitment to learning and understanding of ones own strengths and weaknesses, amongst the population. People need to think about the somebody they are and where their strengths and weaknesses live because if they dont stop to consider what theyre good at and what they need to improve, they will find themselves in the 87% of the population who dont enjoy what they do. Following this discovery, I completed a personality canvass on 16Personalities.com that stated my strengths and weaknesses following answering a series of questions, in hopes to fix a better understanding to how my strengths and weaknesses play into the role as a paramedical. The personality test reve aled that I am altruistic, a good aggroup player, deliver good chats, but also am in like manner selfless and sensitive these results will give me a better comprehension as to how and why a locomote as a paramedic is the right fit for me.My strengths of being able to work well in a team setting, having good communication skills and being altruistic will help me as a paramedic, while these are essential characteristics to becoming a commodious paramedic. The test revealed that I am tolerant and reliable, where it explains I excel in team environments where I am able to listen to others, even when their opinions contradict mines and I am irritated by the idea of letting people down, so I can be counted on to see any task by means of. It is important for paramedics to be good team players and be trustworthy because paramedics are often placed situations where they have to work with other people (like the police and firefighters) where we have to trust each other and work well to gether in a situation whereby we are forced to rely to a great extent possibly for our own well-being, and everyone else on scene. The test also showed that I instinctively know how to capture an audience, and pick up on mood and motivation in ways that allow them to communicate with reason, emotion, passion, constraint whatever the situation calls for, further elaborating saying that I can shift my tone and manner to reflect the needs of the audience, while still maintaining my own voice. These great communication skills are a crucial part to the career as it will allow a more accurateassessment of the situation through uncovering what happened, how many people were involved or whether there is any remaining danger. Being able to talk to people and keep both patients and family or others on the scene calm can make the situation easier to control, and maintaining conversation with a patient can help to retrieve important culture that whitethorn be needed for their treatment. It was uncovered that I have an unyielding desire to do good for others and for my community, and that I genuinely believe that if I can conscionable bring people together, I can do a world of good. Because of the nature of the career, where paramedics are responding to people who need help, it is essential individuals pursuing a career as paramedic have that natural desire to make a difference in the lives of others and in their community. The personality test revealed that I am too selfless and sensitive, explaining that I will bury myself in my hopeful promises and feeling others problems as my own. If Im not careful, I could spread myself too thin, and be left unable to help anyone. Because of my sensitivity to others it means that sometimes I feel problems that arent my own and try to fix things I cant fix and spending too much time worrying about whether if I am doing enough. My weaknesses might make things difficult as a paramedic because the reality of it is I will only be with th e patient until they are in the hospital. It is not possible to be able to solve every problem, and if I carry that burden on my shoulders on the job, it will be very difficult for me to have good mental stability making me more supersensitised to PTSD. One way I can improve my weakness is talk about my feelings as I am feeling with coworkers or the therapist. If I am diligent about keeping a realistic perception of the situation I am in, and understand there is so much one person can do, I am confident I can maneuver through each call with more ease.In conclusion, it is evident that my strengths as a natural team player, great communicator, and altruistic by nature would help make me a great paramedic. Paramedics work in stressful and pressured work environments, where lives are affected by the outcome of their actions. This can be made even more difficult by the long working hours. The role has a gravid amountof responsibility, and these are important qualities for those who wish to do well in emergency care. A great paramedic would not be able to fulfill difficult and distressing work to the capacity that they need to without being able to work well with others on scene, be able to probe and extract information strategically, and have the natural desire to be there to make a difference in a time of crisis.

Internal and external influences on business opportunities

Internal and external influences on contrast opportunitiesBusiness is like the blood that flows through our bodies, with out concern our lives would be almost impossible. Business plays many different roles in our every twenty-four hours lives. Most people either own or work for a particular proposition business. Businesses kick in it possible for the community and even further places such as overseas countries to receive and sell goods and attend. A business tin give the gate be anything that provides goods and run to the community such as corner shops providing customers with goods and sweets and they enkindle besides be larger companies such as Nike selling shoes and clothing completely told over the world. Businesses kick for our economy to grow and become stronger, with out a strong economy a country can not run as smoothly as preferred. One of the main(prenominal) reasons why businesses ar so important in our everyday life is payable to the fact that businesse s provide millions and millions of people with crease opportunities. If businesses did not exist people will not be able to work and earn specie for everyday living. there argon certain factors that can influence a business. These factors include internal and external influences.Internal influences atomic number 18 influences that a business has some control over, such influences include product, location, counsel, resource focussing and business culture.Product influencesThese influences affect a large studyity of the internal structures and operations of a business.Depending on the types of goods and serve the business produces will depend on the internal structure. If the goods being produced require certain equipment, these needs must be catered to so that the business may go on with its production. Each type of business has a different set of product influence, for example a service provider will require less preparation, whilst on the other hand a manufacturer will need more services to produce the goods sold. The size of a business can be determined by the different types of goods and services produced and in addition the availability of technology. So from this we down the stairsstand that the amount of goods and services produced by a business depends on the size of the business.Poor productivity can be seen in the article evoke at Vodafone Sydney morning herald, this bushels on the business because Vodafone is providing very poor services to their customers, therefore tempting the customers to switch to another network, pickings business away from Vodafone.Location influencesOne of the most important factors of a business is the location in which that business is positioned in. The location can either make or break the business.Location is especially important for retail and service oriented businesses, as they need to be seen and recognized by customers. The business owner must take into consideration of where he/she chooses to locate thei r businessThe business must be in argona with a good image, for eg not a poor suburb, they business must be laid in a place were customers are consistently walking past and spotting the shop, for eg in the city. some other important thing is that the business must be convenient towards the customers, so that they may take the time and effort to check the place out, if the business is located in a area which is not convenient the customers may loose reside and go somewhere else.Resource influences-Basically there are 4 main types of resources available to a business, these includeHuman resourcesInformation ResourcesPhysical resourcesFinancial resourcesHuman resources may be considered as the most important resource, for they are the employees that take into account for the business to run. Information resources are all the actions in which the business takes to research and learn more about their situation for eg sales reports. Physical resources include all the equipment and to ols required for running the business. Financial resources are basically what the business depends on to buy and help support their business, for example to buy new machines.Management influences in that location is no doubt that over time businesses and the way in which businesses are run have dramatically changed. Management has been a part of business that has been changed in an effective way. In the past there were many levels of management and hierarchy in a business that new ideas and issues had to go through, but now due to many factors such as the pressure of competitiveness from globalisation the way in which businesses are run have been altered. These days there are frequently fewer levels that new ideas and issues have to go through, this will result in quicker and more efficient decisions that in the long run will allow the business to focus on the way it runs. This allows businesses to conform quicker and more efficiently to the ever changing needs and wants of consu mers because there are fewer managers in which the process of decision making must go through.Business cultureIn reality every business has its own type of business culture, these are all the values, beliefs and ideas that are agreed upon by all employees and managers of the business. The culture of a business is shown in the way in which the business acts and performs. Business culture is unremarkably shown in the rules and regulations of a business such as the way staff are expected to dress and behave. Culture has been proven to be a necessary tool that must be used by businesses to achieve the best out of its staff members and customers. Business culture is proven to be important in the video Australias food fight west farmers vs. Woolworths. Coles have changed their business culture by undergoing management change, which has allowed for a different culture to be applied, and this has proven to be successful as they are now basically ahead of Woolworths.Internal influences have an extraordinary impact on business in Australia. They include every thing from were the business is located to how the business is run. The location of a business basically is inbred for the success of the business, depending on were it is located, it must be convenient and plain to customers. If it is not located in a convenient area customers may not be able to get to the business and grease ones palms from it. The management of a business is the way in which the business is run, in order to have a successful business it must be under good management and the necessary actions must be taken when they are called for, for eg if employees are needed to be cut off, due to lack of monetary sustainability. So basically it is necessary for businesses to be affected by internal influences in a positive way.External influencesExternal influences are factors that a business may have humble or no control over, such factors include Economic, financial, geographical, social, legal, poli tical, institutional, technological, competitive situation and markets influences.Economical influencesIn Australia and the rest of the world, the economy experiences economical cycles. These cycles include booms and busts (recession). Basically during an economic boom the economy experiences higher levels of employment, they may be so confident in their sales that they may increase the legal injury of items to gain higher profits. besides during booms wages of employees tend to increase as more profit is being made by the business. However the economic cycle does have its down side, such as when the economy is experiencing a recession period. An unfortunate reality of recessions is that employment rates decrease due to the fact that the business is not making generous sale profits to keep their employees. Another effect of recession is that business may not be able to raise the price of their products because people are not purchasing so they may have to even lower prices to co ntinue to compete in the market. The influences of economical factors are shown in the article gaseous state prices soar and no relief in site. Due to the poor economical status prices are raised and customers may not be able to purchase petrol at this price. Another ecomical influence can be seen in the radio article impact of floods on grocery prices 2GB, Sydney, this impacts on the business because all the crops are being destroyed making it impossible to make a profit, with farmers not making profits the economy will suffer and be under pressure.Financial influencesFinancial influences impact a business in several ways. due to deregulation which is basically the extermination of giving medication regulation in an business, Businesses are now able to make better competitiveness with each other. Even better, now due to globalisation, Australia is now able to mountain goods overseas, further more up(a) the financial sustainability of the country.Geographical influencesGeograph ical influences impact businesses in many ways. Australia is located in the Asia-pacific region, the economical statuss in these surrounding countries are very important in the pursuit of Australia. Basically if china is doing well, it may be able to trade goods and services with Australia creating an advantage for both countries. Another thing is that a lot of Australian companies are located in the Asia-Pacific region, so the countries must be economically doing well for the Australian companies to survive. Also the demography of the country has a significant influence on businesses, for eg Australia must be run to suit people of all different cultures, ages and sexes. One major demographic impact on Australia is the ageing creation, with an ageing population there must be centres and facilities created for elders. Also with people retiring, their jobs will need to be completed by younger people, who may not be as experienced as the retired worker. Globalisation is also an impor tant fact of geographical issues, due to globalisation Australia is not tied down just to trade goods and services throughout Australia, but how ever to do so around the entire world. The impact of globalisation can be seen in the video picking up an Aussie apple, we see that Australia is beginning to import overseas apples to Australia.Social influencesSocial influences have an sever impact on the success of a business. For eg as time goes on peoples taste in fashion and trends will change. If businesses do not adapt to these changes they may be affected in a very negative way. In order for a business to make a profit they must take into consideration all the new fashions and trends going around. One other major social influence is the influence of of our environment which is basically wearing away day by day, businesses must always consider what is in the best interest of the environment, for eg not giving out plastic bags after a sale. One final issue is the issue of family-work practices, as women give birth they must draw a blank work, and this may result in the business losing an employee, affecting in the production of the business. An example of social influences can be seen in the article Petrol price soars and no relief in site, With the rise of petrol, the people in society may decide that instead of using cars, they can probably save money by using public transport or riding a bike to work.Legal influencesBusinesses can not just do as they please. There are many legal actions that influence businesses and basically tell them what they can or cant do. With more and more laws being passed onto businesses, the business must adapt their company to what the law is telling them to do. Generally the people of a society expect that businesses may run under the rules and guidelines provided by the law. Businesses must be cognisant of all the laws so that they may not breach them and pay the penalties.Political influencesEven though political influences ma y not be the most affective factors onto a business, they still have a pretty heavy impact. For eg whenever a new election Is held, the new government may introduce new policies. A policy that was introduced in 2000 was the goods and services tax, this was a 10 percent tax on the supply of most goods and services used in Australia, this affected businesses in a way that they had to collect taxes basically on behalf of the government. However deregulation has also been introduced in the picture in the past few decades, this is the removal of government regulation in industry, and this takes pressure off businesses and allows for a greater range of competitiveness.Institutional influencesThree institutional influences on business are government, regulatory bodies and trade unions and employer associations.GovernmentThree levels which are federal, state and local.Federal government deals mainly with issues such as tax, making sure that the taxes are being paid and also things such as how the businesses are running in according to the customs regulations.State governments deal with lower case issues such as workers rights and responsibilities such as OHS requirements and making sure businesses are abiding by the state laws and trade practicesLocal government deals with issues such the condition of building and making sure of improvements, put rules and fire regulationsRegulatory bodiesThese bodies observe and understand the way that businesses deal with certain issues and how the business treats its community and consumers. Examples of regulatory bodies include the Office of fair trading and the Australian competition and consumer commission. (ACCC)Other institutional influences are Trade unions and Australian stock exchanges, these groups have aims such as improving working conditions and pay rates.Technological influencesengineering without a doubt has had probably one of the most affects on businesses. With new technologies being invented and discovered every day this can only help improve productivity and efficiency for businesses. Technology has allowed for robotic machinery to be used in productivity which in the long run cheapens the cost of productivity as no employee or has to be paid. Robots also help to reduce the amount of boring and repetitive jobs that some humans may have to do. Also communication technology has been improving rapidly over the past few years making it even easier to communicate with suppliers and consumers, with out them actually being there. Businesses must strive to use the available technology to the best of their ability so that they may keep up or even be ahead of competitors.Competitive situation influencesThese influences may be very helpful and useful to both consumers and producers, for eg when two businesses are competing to be the market leader, they will lower costs of their stock to attract customers. As a result they will be making more sales and more importantly a profit. These competitive sit uations also benefit consumers because with competition in a market there will be a greater range of goods available for consumption, this allows the consumer to get a wider mix of choice when considering the good or service they want. Competitive situations are shown in the video Australias food fight west farmers VS Woolworths as these companies are competing with each other to get the most customer satisfaction, It also discuss how the affects of globalisation such as Aldi here in Australia also competing amongst the big guns.Another example of competitive situation is shown in the article Anger at Vodafone, with Vodafone giving such poor services, customers will want to change to another network providing greater coverage.External influences have a major impact on our every day lives in Australia, with all the different types of factors such as social and technological influences our lives are affected on a day to day basis. If external influences did not exist we would not be living in a society were goods and services from all around the world are accessible to us for our own usage. External influences can be both positive and /or negative for example, competitiveness in the market allows for a variety of options for consumers to choose from but contrasting the effects of external factors such as geographical issues involving the weather can have a negative affect, for eg flooding in farms or drought seasons.ConclusionAs mentioned in the executive summary above, business can be compared to the blood in a living organism, it is essential for our everyday survival and living. Business allows us to live the pleasures and entertaining lives that we live each day. Internal influences summed up can be recognized as influences that a business can control whilst external influences are those factors that the business can not control. Internal influences for eg can be explained as factors that a business can use and apply to help determine the success of their b usiness, such as the location in which they choose to place their business. External can be explained by using the example of a economic recession, this can affect the business in many negative ways such as letting employers go. So summed up we can say that business is essential for everyday living and it can be broken down into two different types, Internal and external, and it can be concluded that they basically determine how the business is run and how successful it will be.The end L

Influence of culture on emotions and communication styles

Influence of agri purification on emotions and conference demeanorsThis paper explores the contingency and the completion of cultures function on the colloquy process and styles. Communication is the process through which respective(prenominal)s sh ar ideas and study. Its efficientness is gauged on the level of understanding by the receiver. Such overlap of ideas and nurture may be explicit/precise or requiring the receiver to take off/deduce the meaning from the non conclusive pass on that is passed. The co-existing factor leads to much analyzable chemical component part of culture (Kapoor, 2003). Culture is simply the way of life of a given people. It will refer to the determine, norms and basically the set in motionation on which a grouping of people base their reasoning and pluralism on. Cultural set have varying extents of meaning across the various ethnical divides. Some divides have much emphasis on the set as presented by culture than others. Longitudinally, individuals, within a cultural divide, value their cultural aspects with varying degrees. In dole outing the possible influence on communication it is important to likewise consider the constituents of and individual. Emotions can be defined as the textual let looseions representing the writes mood and the facial expression. Emotions can alter or alter an recitation of a plain text. The development of various sets of emotions may vary across cultures and individuals. The evoking of the emotions is largely dependent on a persons personality , which is the sets of characteristic that assort a person from the other .An individual will emotionally respond to similar information differently depending on the transmitter of such information. Emotions being interior can be regulated by an individual in determining the extent that they will be released.AbstractResearches indicate that culture has an influence on the way individuals exchange information and ideas and indeed the way such ideas ar interpreted. The definition of communication by including to a greater extent(prenominal) than one individual depicts a cultural aspect. The involvement of an individual as an entity capable of making an inference from what information has been relayed can as soundly non be overlooked. There is a planetary idea that Asians are socialists with the Europeans and Americans being individualists. Researches indicate that people with values at individual-level close to the norms in the culture are happier than those with values less(prenominal) normative.Discu ssion and Literature reviewA culture is constituted by, among other elements, individuals. In dissecting the culture, it is indispensable to first consider the individuals and then look at them in the cultural scope. Culture entails of those patterns, implicit and explicit, for and of manner usually acquired and then transmitted by symbols, encompassing the distinctive attainment of human groups, comprising human artifacts, ideas, values and norms that bides (Brown Singelis, 1995).Psychology presents a human being as an entity that can influence and be influenced by the environment. The environment, for purposes of this paper, will be composed of people in the societal setup. As individuals co-exist, they influence each other and develop a boundary that guides them in their relationships. In relating, each individual will first display the ego and will probably be influenced by the environment to have a collective representation in the said relationships. Two concepts come into the limelight here the individualism and the collectivism. Individualism is the expression of manyones ego. An individuals self will attempts to protect itself from societal intrusion. Individualists reason as entities and explicitly express their ideas to others as well as avow that such ideas be taken as truth. Collectivism is the group context that an individual associates with. A collectivist will, before passing/inferring any information consider the societal values/say in such a matter. Such a person will communicate ideas point by the cultural setting. In both cases, emotions will still exist. The concept of self across culturesSelf concept is an essential mediator in cultural behavior patterns. This notion gives way for a more specific billet of self in regulation of preference for colloquial styles. The self might be linked to somewhat communication styles such as collectivism and individualism that has previously been associated to culture. Subsequent to this, the br oad terms of individualism and collectiveness may be used for cultural description spot idiocentric and allocentric characterize individuals. The twain images describing the self emphasize the connectedness referred to as interdependence relationship and the uniqueness and separateness of individuals referred to as independence of self. This draws the conclusion that the more laissez-faire(a) a culture is, the eminenter the probability of sampling the independent self. Similarly, in collectivistic culture, there is a likelihood of people sampling a more interdependent self. Dependence and interdependence of the self determines the behavior characteristics of an individual (Neumann, Steinhuser Roeder, 2009). It is important to note that culture is a composition of similarities in individuals behavior and as such, a collection of individuals affecting communication style in a similar way indicates a cultural influence on communication. The definition of culture and that of indivi duals is related in the sense that an individual is a subset of a culture. An individuals characteristics can only be defined in the context of the culture. It is the sum total of a cultures characteristics that creates boundaries within which the concepts of good and bad can be outlined. For example, a culture may have a regard for openness in communication. Individuals who exert stamp down in conferences appear to exhibit vices in such cultural context.Emotions in the individualistic and collectivist contextsCulture has direct influence towards emotional predictions based on the meanings as well as practices that contexts their occurrence (Mesquita, 2001). His sample included individualists and collectivist in Netherlands. Among the collectivists, emotions were characterized as relational and also contextualized in the phenomena whereas among the individualists, it was characterized as intrapersonal and subjective. His co-relational and procedural bailiwick identified some majo r differences including the interpretation that emotions signals a change of reality among the collectivists as compared to internal, subjective feeling and indeed a little or no implication for belief among the individualists. The findings of the study revealed a concurrence with the hypothesis, that collectivists emotions related to the phenomenon and could only be explained within the contextual relationships and were also a reflection of the said relationships. On the contrary, individualists emotions referred less to their contextual well-disposed environment. The look findings further revealed that among the collectivists emotions are shaped in a style similar to ideas as well as practices of the cultural settings of occurrence but underlining the disparity of oneself and others/ beau monde among the individualists. Furthermore, the boundaries that exist between subjectivity of emotional experiences and the well-disposed reality were found to be thinner in collectivism than in individualism cultures. In communicating with individuals, it becomes infallible to first identify what kind of orientation, whether individualism or collectivism, that they hold. As drawn from the articles findings, this indeed seems to limit the vector of the information to the kind of information that can be received. The idea of collectivism builds a wall inhibiting communication in twain ways. First, the sender of information is guided entirely by what has been inculcated by the culture. The assumption in such a person is that the contextual culture is high-f low-downnly good. There will however be the limitation of the social coverage that the said culture be good or mayhap acceptable. As such, the question of what in the information may be compromised to fit in that particular cultural orientation. Subsequently, collectivism dictates that the twain parties involved in a meaningful conversation be culturally related. Second, the receiver of the information is not at an individual liberty to interpret the information so received (Neumann et al, 2009). One has to go back to the cultural files so as to infer the meaning. In both the cases, culture dictates the emotions that individuals develop from information stimuli. It is important to appreciate that though culture is a valuable asset in the global society and indeed the diversity that brings in beauty and indeed minimize global competition the knowledge base is increasingly becoming a global village. Individuals will no longer be restricted to their original interpretation of signs and ideas. Emotions should not be expressed in the cultural contexts only but also on an individual basis. Indeed the possibility of inhibiting both elements in emotional expression should be every persons efforts. Once information is relayed, an individual should try to have and individual interpretation as well as be informed of the collective interpretation depending on the sender of the information. Either way, th e need for a background on the sender and the receiver should be availed to the respective parties. Expression of a set of emotional elements once information or idea has been received is a critical moment in understanding an individual whether from the individualism or collectivism orientation. Almost all emotions are extremely meaningful for purposes of capturing the global thematic features in a situation. These features commonly referred to as appraisals assist in simplification of the complex social situations by reconstituting that complexity into a single strain intrinsically meaningful in the context of the person experiencing them. For example, emotions like pride, anger, guilt and friendly feeling all reflect a significant theme that goes beyond the mere positive or negative evaluations. The themes give a description of individuals perception to their relationship with the surrounding environment. As such, friendly feelings and pride that are positive might be associated with social harmony and personal achievement which are emphatically different themes.Findings and DiscussionInfluence of culture on emotion suppressionAs aforementioned, individuals exist in societal setups that have capabilities of influencing the way such individuals express or fail to express emotional signs. The concept of emotional suppression is the failure to display ones interpretational responses of information received or limiting the extent of the expression done. accord to Butler et al, (2007), Americans of European values orientation would report less emotion suppression than would Americans who held Asian values and that those holding European values would only suppress their emotions for identity protection. The later would associate emotional suppression with high levels of emotional negativity. As such, European values seemed to hold that an individual could only give up the self expression of emotions unhappily. They identified two major barriers in understanding emotional responses in social interactions as self regulating efforts and the culture. Self regulating efforts can be interpreted to mean that an individual applied personal efforts to fail to or limit the emotional expression. Such would be a false expression of the reality within an individual though it would propagate communication flow. The positive that could be associated with the self regulating efforts is that there is liberty of an individual to distinguish which issues to apply emotional suppression. Whether this is ideally acceptable or not, the effectiveness of communication which is between the two parties can be evaluated. This inquiry further narrowed down to two specific issues namely emotion suppression and two groups of participant who were Americans whose cultural orientation was either Asian or European. Existing literature suggested that emotional suppression may be less linked to negative emotion among the Asian cultures in comparison to European culture, whos e emotional suppression, also displayed as a safeguarding of the self and an assertion of ones will (Kapoor, 2003). The findings of this research showed that cultural orientations tend predict the differences in absolute frequency and the function of emotional suppression as well as the negative emotion related to it.As drawn the findings, emotional suppression was also found to be a reduction of emotional disclosure. The generalization of these findings may pose a challenge since the sample taken had a similar foundation of culture. Nevertheless, some sectional components of the findings were varied. While communicating, the expression of the receivers emotional expression is dependent on the societal values that the individual holds (Nezlek, Kafetsios Smith, 2008). Much as an individual would want to express the emotional expressions as experienced during a communication, there will always be the element of what the relationship existing between the parties communicating entails . For example, in the smallest element of culture that can either exist between immediate family, members must carefully consider their emotional expressions in efforts to maintain harmony. It is possible that a message passed is not delivered yet there is harmony between people but is ultimately not possible to relay a negative, as perceived by the group, emotional expression and maintain cohesiveness. The ability to balance between regulations of emotional responses and maintain the need for the real self in responding to information relayed would be an ideal venture for every individual. Such a balance would ensure that communication is made effective without losing ones self. Furthermore, emotional responses must be duly regarded reclaimable in the process of communication since they offer the required feedback.Effects of individualism and collectivism on conversational stylesIndividualism and collectivism dimensions of culture are founded on some varying fundamental issues tha t may affect the way people communicate. A research conducted sought to come up with a mediation model in attempting to spell out the manner in which culture do influence the communication style from a sample of nine hundred and seventy two individuals across four cultural backgrounds of America, Japan, Korea and Hawaii. According to Park. Kim (2008), that individuals can differ with both independent and the interdependent distinctiveness. The inventionion was to establish if self-construals were aspects of culture that accounted for the alleged usefulness of conversational constraints. In so doing, its easier to trace possibilities of a linkage between culture and the individual values of either independence or interdependence construals of the self. These conversational constraints are the wide-ranging as well as overarching criteria for selecting a conversational strategy and which influence the verbal expression of a message. In their research they identified a fissure where culture is broadly expressed into individualism and collectivism as two contrasting aspects and never as a dimension for explaining why people vary. The research revealed that there is extensive use of interaction strategies intended to provide a protection from the societies influence of the selfs autonomy.Individuals across cultural divides seem to have a craving for a certain level of independence. Though the degree of independence may also vary, this demonstrates the diminishing trend of culture in communication. The selfs autonomy could only be hindered by the harmonization element that is required in the society. With the continued social civilization, a time may come when individuals will co-exist without necessarily agreeing. This does not at all eliminate the need for communication but emphasizes on the diminishing level of concurrence, between the sender and the receiver in communication, which is usually deemed to be necessary for cultural coexistence. According to Brow n Singelis (1995), cultural collectivism compared to individualism tends to be positively associated with the apparent interdependence, but usually unconstructively related to independence.Consistency of culture and the self -concept Asian Americans and European Americans ContextsAccording to Chen English (2007), consistency in cultural differences within and across different contexts demonstrates robustness as well as boundaries that exist in cultural differences in the consistency of self-concept, and also the need for examining several forms of stability in self-concept. The hypothesis was that the cultural variances in consistency of self-concept extended to importance of self-view and the self-enhancement. The researches proposed that a low consistence, as aforementioned, do not necessarily indicate insufficient enduring and meaningful self-view but instead a possibility of it coexisting with the firm. Of the two categories of participants, temporal stability among the Asian Americans ratings of self enhancement within the specific relationships was found to be as high as that of the European Americans. The researchers yielded to other researches suggesting that human beings display a certain degree of manipulability and irregularity in their self concept across contexts but Asians hold more elastic self concepts (Kitayama Mesquita, 2006). The conclusion was that Asians particularly from the East has a relatively low consistence in their self concept globally which reduces abstractness. In fact, referring to the multifaceted research carried out by Brown Singelis (1995), its clear that development of self-construal is greatly influenced by complex cultures. As drawn from findings, individual dimensions do not necessarily hold with the perceived cultural levels. Self-contr developed and cultural collectivism is affected by the overabundant socialization norms, practices and institutions where individual separateness is accounted for. During socializa tion of a child, collectivist mothers tend to incite empathy and listening in their kids, while under individualists mothers, kids are taught keys words and self-expression skills all important(p) in promoting cognitive development, problem solving capacity and the perceived autonomy in building friendships.High and low contextualization in communicationHigh contextualization in communication refers to a scenario where much of the information is thought to be internalized in a person or in the physical context. Message is inferred from the context. The parties communicating are thought to be familiar with each others physical context as well as the internal perception of ideas and information being passed. Low context communication refers to the explicit, explanatory and clear use of the accepted codes to pass information. Park and Kim had gratify in studying relationships that existed between adherence to European as well as the American cultural backgrounds to communication in Asia. They had the notion that Asian cultures use a high context communication as advanced in the 2001s Gudykunt concept of both high and low contexts in communication. A high context communication among the Asians is associated with Confucianism that emphasizes on communication as a tool towards developing harmony as well as maintaining it in interpersonal relationships. Asian values seemed to mediate the identified relationships between collectiveness, which is the solidarity sense in a society, and communication behavior. On the other hand, individualistic values were said to be related to low communication that focuses on uniqueness of an individual and hence use of explicit codes in passing a message (Kapoor, 2003).Indeed, Asians were found to harbor more cognition to collectiveness, emotional self mold and conformity to norms as well as humility. The researchers examined three hypotheses, among two hundred, and ten Asian America and hundred and thirty 6 European America, a s follows. First, for both Asian and European Americans, the open and explicit styles of communication were to fit with the low context style of communication. Second, the Asian Americas were to display less use of low context style of communication and instead use high context than the European Americans (Chua et al, 2005). Finally, for both samples taken, and with the element of sex and race, the hypothesis was that high level adherence to Confucius would positively relate to high context while negatively relating to low context styles of communication. The findings were that contrary to the hypothesis, collectiveness was found among the European Americans and the conclusion was that perhaps European Americans belonged to in-groups that valued assertiveness and self expression.Intentionality in communicationIntentionality is the indication of aims, plans, goals and urgency guiding the actions intended to be followed by an individual. Cultural variations may be founded on the socie tal structure. Such structures may require that individuals actions closely coordinates with those of the other members of society as well as reducing social conflict. Others may cue setting of ones plans and goals. In contrast, the first structure calls for individuals sensitivity to the environment while the later expects that the environment is sensitive to the individuals. Intentionality is determined by the different perceptions of primary and the utility(prenominal) controls inhibited within individuals. Primary control provides for the individuals exercise of freedom and control over a persons psychology (Kapoor, 2003). Secondary control implies the inability to separate an object lens or idea from the field in context. Subsequent to this issue, motivation is in independence to autonomy in thinking for those under influence of primary control whilst guiding those under secondary control. The emphasis of emotions is more on those in secondary controls as such these groups o f individuals associate the tone in the voice during conversation in inferring the meaning.Self determinism in communicationSelf determinism is the theory asserting that individuals have an entire control of their destiny. Personal responsibility is therefore the key to influencing what is and would come across in the future. The process of communication involves inferring of information whether sent or received. As such, an individual has a responsibility in determining the meaning. Culture must not be taken to cover-up a persons irresponsibility in making sound inferences in the conversations. The influence of culture in communication must be subjected to individuals efforts to control meaning. The search for the reality is a personal responsibility and which is dependent on a persons need to not only coexist with others but also to develop as an individual. Furthermore, the amount of time available in corporate world equates with money. In corporate world, individuals communicat ing disrespectful of their cultural background are likely to use a more direct, explicit and a clear style of communication. This is meant to improve time efficiency and save energy. Clear evidence that the world is tending towards direct style of communication is indicated by the use of interpreters when communicating to various parties with diverse cross-cultural backgrounds (Chen English, 2007). In order to effectively identify with such parties culture there is need to hold cultural harmonization forums first.Social status of the communicating partiesPower relationship between the communicating parties is also a variable that influences communication. When conducting supervisory roles, communication is usually more direct especially in conflict management than it is among subordinates. The later would use non-confrontational / indirect communication. These two aspects of communication indicate that individuals consider the context within which they are communicating. Whether am ong the individualists or collectivists, the said aspects appeared to prevail. Though there is no direct relationship between power and culture, the two interacts in the real word. Relationships usually exist between two people who are not at per. Two subordinates though at the same social level are at different levels in terms of who knows more in particular issue concerning the organization. The subordinate who knows more of issue A assumes the role of the more powerful in that issue (Yoon et al, 1996). Respect which is associated with culture since it is an element/value geared towards bringing harmony also exists between people of different power levels. There is also some degree of respect that is shown by an individual who is depending on the other. All these scenarios depict a resultant communication style which is culturally based (Butler et al, 2007).Convergence and divergence in communicationDivergence in communication is the disagreement that arises from the receiver of a message between the actual message as per his/her interpretation and the reported interpretation. In conflicting situations, expatriates and their host nations diverge in communication, not only because of the obvious typecast cultures but also by alterations of responses accordingly though the motives vary. Power -distance perspective is the most valid explanation in this phenomenon. Convergence element is strongly displayed by the superior measure up of the East whereby direct-indirect peculiarity is diluted by the expatriates who alter their approach to conflict (Brown Singelis, 1995). This is, in both groups, a reaction to urgency. The clarity of communication and the diminished sensitivity to the face needs as compared to the obtuse communication, and the honoring face needs has increasingly acquired more value in situations where time is essence. On the other hand, the abstractness of direct communication is assuming a more diplomatic path which serves the needs of a global workplace especially in dealing with a collectivist Asian (Nezlek et al, 2008). Moreover, agreeing to norms does serve and indeed promote a harmonious and mutually respectful workplace.General comments on methodologies and samplesCulture as a variable influencing communication cannot be numerically expressed. In general, the methodologies used captured data from the participants and were later generalized to be a representation of a non definite issue. The studies therefore were more of measures of intent behavior instead of the actual behavior patterns. Approximately eighty percent of the sampled participants did not have the Asians collectivism cultural orientation. The participants were tested whether they believed in such an orientation. This definitely affected the consistency of the idea flow from the participants. It appears that the participants were aware of the data that they were supposed to generate. Moreover the samples were too small to correctly constitute a generali zation. In a culture based study, the sample should be big and wide in terms of occupation and age composition. As such, the data would be collected not only from the students, as it is the case, but from the wider population. Cultural differences are likely to be less pronounced amongst students than it is in other groups (Chua et al, 2005). How negatively or positively skew the data did not get the desired attention that such a data should have. Deductions on such non-vector subjects should be majorly based on the Skewedness and not on mere cross-correlations.The overreliance on previous researches in coming up with deductions is also evident in determining the relationship of emotions and culture on communication. The propagation element increases the error that is supposed to be as minimal as possible. The errors accumulated are loaded onto a new study meaning that from the onset, the study is adversely affected by previous errors. The ideal scenario would have been to carry out the coincidental researches at a reasonably close interval of not more than a year to increase the validity. However the researchers attempts hold a substantial validity which provides a basis for future research and which are currently useful with low error prevalence.SynopsisIn conclusion, the aforementioned discussion displays a relationship between emotions, culture and the communication style adopted by individuals. The general consensus is that human beings exhibit, from theories of creation, a common origin. They are also social beings that cannot escape the influence of others in their social life. Although there is evidence of strains of individuals whose energy protect them from influence from others, there is a limit that such a characteristic can endure. For example, individuals against some national ideas will however concur with the wishes of their families or their closest friends. According to Brown Singelis (1995), when relevant intermediate values are considered whilst analyzing communication and culture, the diversity across culture and be justified. These two authors consider the direct effect that culture has on an individual behavior and resulting communication patterns. In fact, culture is seen to influence the psychological make-up of an individual thus affecting the communication behavior exhibited by the person.Even if the said friends are supporting the negation of the national idea, it still remains that those close friends constitute a society and as such a culture. Moreover, when construction of both the society and individual correspond, individuals are more likely to have a more involvement in the society and hence be more affectively involved (Chua et al, 2005). It is important to note that due to the dynamic nature of the communication interactions, intercultural communication standards can be achieved only if the communicating parties mindfully adjust their behavior in communication. As drawn from findings, individual dimens ions do not necessarily match with the perceived cultural levels. Self-contractual and cultural collectivism is affected by the prevailing socialization norms, practices and institutions where individual separateness is accounted for. During socialization of a child, collectivist mothers tend to encourage empathy and listening in their kids, while under individualists mothers, kids are taught keys words and self-expression skills crucial in promoting cognitive development, problem solving capacity and the perceived autonomy in building friendships. Prior research which basically encouraged on overbold tests on groups in deriving cultural comparisons, tend to effectively open a wider scope in culture study by perhaps support potential researchers in contributing to the elaboration on the correlation that cultural.RecommendationsIn efforts to achieving better deductions, any cultural and self reacted studies ought to be carried in the very cultural context of the participants. When dealing with the collectivist individuals, it will be better to determine their strength in their cultural orientation. This will perhaps facilitate relations and effective workplace culture which act to boots performance level from team levels tickling down to the entire organization. When conducting such cultural tests or cross-sectional research, attention ought to be laid on the perceived impact that preceding findings would have on the conclusion derived. The as

Jazz and Blues Feedback to Jamaica :: essays papers

Jazz and Blues Feedback to JamaicaMusic seems to mimic time in a way. As the human race race passes through history, the medical specialty and its language acts in essence as a speculum of human culture and its path, lavish with its longings, its grief, yet always stirring (Santoro, 2). In this report, I will walk down this path, and show the significance music has played on the Jamaican and American cultures. This paper will illustrate the profound influence that American music, primarily jazz and blues, had on Jamaican reggae, and by breaking down each type of music to a simple rhythm, I will show the relationships between them.If asked about the origins of Jamaican folk culture, some people might answer that it originated in Africa and remained sedate by other cultures (such as Europe). Even though Jamaicans are mostly of African descent, Jamaicas only language in none other that side of meat (Chang and Chen, 10). Whether the race or language influenced Jamaicas culture, has been a question of long debate. Professor Rex Nettleford, a noted social commentator, sees the language of a nation as the primary bearer of social genes. Professor Nettleford answers the question by explaining the Jamaican experienceAfrica is indeed tolerated in spurts of sycretised or reinterpreted folk-lore a little bit of dance, a little bit of music, a little bit of story telling, and a few words lacing the Anglo-Saxon tongue with exotic tones and colour. But our ball education system, our accepted belief system, our art, law and morals, the legitimate customs and so many of our habits and perceived capabilities all indicate of a so-called cultural spirit are dominated by the European heritage (Chang and Chen, 10).The entire argument is conclusive and evident in most points, except the little bit of African music, which is questionable. The root of reggae music has been said to be fixed in slavery. The Rhythms, songs, and dances that survived well into the twentieth centur y in rural Jamaica are seen as solely African (Davis and Simon, 9).During the pose of the seventeenth century, Jamaica was basically a giant agricultural factory, used by a few British planters. The plantations worked by slaves imported from Africa made tremendous amounts of money, hardly the planters gleaned all the profits. Over the next 250 years when slavery was active, about thirty million Africans were brought to the New World, and is known as the largest forced migration in all of human history (Davis and Simon, 9).

Amy Tan’s A Mother’s Tongue Essay -- Amy Tan A Mother’s Tongue

Amy Tans A Mothers Tongue The purpose of Amy Tans essay, Mother Tongue, is to show how challenging it washbowl be if an individual is raised by a parent who speaks limited English (36) as Tans mother does, partially because it can import in people being judged poorly by others. As Tans primary care giver, her mother was a significant part of her childhood, and she has a strong influence over Tans writing style. Being raised by her mother taught her that ones perception of the world is hard based upon the language spoken at home. Alternately, peoples perceptions of one another are based largely on the language used. Tan was innate(p) to a pair of Chinese immigrants. Her mother understood English extremely well, but the English she spoke was broken.(36) Many people not familiar with her focussing of speaking found it very difficult to understand her. As a result of this, Tan would have to pretend to be her mother, and she called people up to clamor at them while her mo ther stood behind her and prompted her. This caused Tan to be ashamed of her mother throughout her youth, but as she grew, she realized that the language she shares with her mother is a language of intimacy (36) that she even uses when speaking with her husband. Just as with her books, Tans focus in this essay is her mother. Tan considered her book, The Joy Luck Club, a success after her mother read it and exclaimed over how easy it was to read. However, the audience of this essay is not Tans mother, but rather it is anyone who can uphold to this situation. Tans purpose was to bring to attention the fact that when the language spoken at home is different from that spoken by the general public, problems leave arise for those caught in... ...ensitive to the situation. The doctors would have a totally different story. Tan succeeds in her use of pathos as she manages to make her mother seem helpless. This is quite a feat, as her obvious strengths have already been displaye d in situations such as when yelling at the stockbroker. Tan supports her depiction of her mother as a dupe by bringing up how people did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. (37) Tan has proven herself a master of rhetorical appeals as well as proving her point, that language can have drastic affects on the users. She has judged and been judged by her language, and has seen her mother disrespected because of how she speaks. Speech is important, as it is used as a tool to determine the limitations of your thoughts.
